....as I am coming to the end of my UN mission here in Cyprus. During this period I met several colleagues from abroad who I worked with you during this tour of duty. It was nice to work with you all and I learned something about your way of doing your job and I have tried to explain the way we still do in the Netherlands and believe it or not a lot it is the same.
Not every police-officer was working in the community policing before this mission. I was surprised that some of you where detectives, worked as a liaison with the prisons, as a full time driving instructor and in offices. But it was possible to work together for peace and security in this part of the world.
Maybe your name was mentioned several times in the stories I wrote on this weblog. But from now on your face is also part of this blog. I also realise that not all the faces are part of this chapter, but most of my colleagues working in sector 4 (Famagusta, Dherinia, Pyla and Athienou) I have asked over the last few weeks to pose for a good photo. The result I have put at the end of this chapter.
Only the members of the Dutch contingent were here for 6 month, all the others were here in Cyprus for a period of 12 month and sometimes more. For me it was wonderful to stay in Cyprus (again) and I made a lot of good friends.
And when you come to visit Holland, you are more than welcome to visit my home town of Marken and I really hope that we will meet again.
I will end this short chapter of my weblog with the following words to the colleagues I met and worked with. It’s written in your own language:

Gracias por todo lo aprehendido de ti. Tedereo lo major para ahora y el futuro.
* For the Australian:
Thank you for all I learned from you. I wish you all the best for now and in the future.

Héél even dat ik dat ik een computervirus had opgelopen, maar een 2e blik leerde me dat het je warme hartelijke afscheidswoorden waren aan je "collega's in den vreemde" :-)
En je Engels is er ook stukken op vooruit gegaan! Mijn complimenten!
Leuk ook al die 'koppies' te zien van je internationale collega's, die nu ook je vrienden voor het leven zijn!! Het is volgens mij een onvergetelijke periode geworden! Ik heb genoten van al je verhalen en kijk er naar uit om onder het genot van een kopje koffie op een terrasje in Marken je verhalen 'live' te horen. Ik zal je moeten delen met velen anderen dat is me duidelijk gezien de vele reacties altijd op je stukjes. Dus wellicht moet je gewoon een gezellig welcome home feestje geven!! Ik ben van de partij! Met bewondering je verslag gelezen, waarin je een ieder persoonlijk bedankt voor de prettige samenwerking en dan nog wel in de moedertaal.
In het afgelopen half jaar zijn jullie niet alleen collegae geweest, maar ook vrienden geworden.
Ook onze complimenten, dat je alle collegae op de gevoelige plaat hebt weten vast te leggen.
Er zijn vele verborgen talenten zichtbaar geworden!
Dank je wel, dat je ons een kijkje hebt gegund in je leven, gedurende het vervullen van je tweede vredesmissie op Cyprus.
Sterkte bij het afscheid, een voorspoedige thuisreis en we hopen je binnenkort te ontmoeten.
Wellicht "open huis" voor je familie en vrienden?!

Hallo Alex,
Vandaag 7 augustus heb ik al jouw verslagen in een ruk gelezen. De foto's komen later.
Ik bewonder jouw manier van verslaggeving. Als je de ogen sluit, lijkt het haast een film. Fantastisch. We hadden niet verwacht dat jullie taak daar zo complex is, alhoewel de situatie aldaar ook heel apart is en voor jullie de meest ongebruikelijke dingen met zich meebrengt. Het omgaan met allerlei ''exoten'' lijkt ons ook zeer interessant en leerzaam. Ik meen dat ik daar al eens eerder over heb geschreven.
Vandaag over een week zal je weer thuis zijn en ga je weer de gewone ''diender'' zijn, wat toch wel weer vreemd zal zijn.
Zelf zijn we weer met de voorbereidingen bezig voor onze volgende reis die 12 september begint. Voor de 3e keer naar India met Djoser. Nu is ons doel daar Ladakh om daar een trekking te gaan doen. Van eind maart t/m 20 april waren we in Birma. Ook weer een fantastische reis naar een heel bijzonder land met erg vriendelijke en lieve mensen. We hebben daar erg genoten. 5 Uur video en bijna 700 foto's hebben we daar aan overgehouden.
Begin volgend jaar (januari of februari) willen we naar Patagonie en Vuurland, ook weer met Djoser.
Vanaf 1 juli krijg ik nu AOW ben ik officieel met pensioen. Vorige week zaterdag hebben we onze verjaardagen gevierd, ik mijn 65-ste !!!!!!
Omdat het nu al erg laat is hier (23.35 u) ga ik dit bericht afsluiten.
Graag willen we jou bedanken voor jouw mooie verhalen en foto's.
Ik beloof je dat wij binnenkort weer van ons laten "horen".
We wensen jou een goede thuisvlucht en welcome home.

Hallo Alex, ik hoef je niet te vertellen dat het een tegenvaller kan zijn als je het mooie eiland moet verlaten, maar het is ook fantastisch om weer naar huis te mogen.
Ik wens je natuurlijk veel sterkte op de Mug Out. Uit ervaring weet ik dat die hééééél gezellig kan zijn. Geniet van de laatste dagen op Cyprus en ga even op een stil plekje zitten om de revue van het laatste half jaar lekker op je in te laten werken. Je zult er dan achter komen dat je een heerlijke tijd hebt gehad.
Jammer dat ik je de 16e niet kan zien, maar volgend jaar zal ik er zeker bij zijn.
Op dit moment ben ik herstellende van een griep. Ik zou afgelopen week in het bureau alles afwerken en overdragen; dus niet. Vanaf maandag heb ik (bijz.)verlof tot de vertrekdatum op 18 aug.
Monique is inmiddels met het opstarten van 'waarbenje.nu' bezig geweest. We hebben al wat ingevuld. Zodra het klaar is hoor je daar over. In Soedan blijf ik gewoon mijn un-emailadres houden.
Ik wens je een goede thuiskomst en we spreken elkaar.

I’m very glad to have you beside me, here on Cyprus. Your life and working experience was amazing. Thanks to share with me. I learned a lot. For me, I was honoured and privileged to know you and to work with you. With your smile and cheerful personality all our tasks appear easier then they are. Fortuneless, you can stay here only 6 months. Pity, because you and your colleagues from Netherland are valuable members of this Mission.
